No big trees beside the house

The title is the advice of a cousin who is an engineer. It is now getting common to have trees near the house for purposes of the shade that is beneficial during summer. However, the risk in having the tree near the house is the foliage. When the leaves fall and landed on the roof it can clog the down spout. Another problem is the big roots that may damage the base of the house. Think about the logic of that advice.
